Decoding Dyslexia - NJ

So 4 years later… is your district saying #Dyslexia ? Dysgraphia? Dyscalculia?

Remember IEPs can’t classify a student for special education services under Dyslexia, Dysgraphia or Dyscalculia because those are not one of the 13 classifications, HOWEVER, they CAN use those words to describe how and why a student struggles. They can use those words to drive appropriate goals, objectives, accommodations, modifications and interventions.

Have you been successful in saying Dyslexia in your child’s IEP?Four years ago today, the US DOE tweeted this message and backed it up with a guidance letter for all school systems nationwide. The guidance, in short, says: “The purpose of this letter is to clarify that there is nothing in the IDEA that would prohibit the use of the terms dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia in IDEA evaluation, eligibility determinations, or IEP documents.”

So why are families of dyslexic children still fighting this battle? #Saydyslexia
